Managing our impacts
The Borumba Pumped Hydro Project is a long‑term investment in Australia’s clean energy future. We are currently undertaking the exploratory works phase — an important step in understanding the site and informing future design.
We recognise that our works can have real impacts on the people, businesses and communities around the project area. Queensland Hydro is committed to identifying and managing these impacts carefully and respectfully, while building strong relationships with the people who live, work and visit the area.
Some impacts require mitigation to minimise disruption. Others present opportunities to contribute positively to the region if they are identified early and managed deliberately.
Our approach
We manage impacts and opportunities through assessment, planning, mitigation measures, ongoing monitoring, engagement with communities and transparent reporting, in line with regulatory requirements.
This approach allows us to respond to change, address concerns and apply learnings as the project progresses.
Managing social impacts and opportunities
Social impacts relate to how the project may affect people, communities and local economies. These impacts can be both positive and negative, depending on how they are managed over time.
We manage social impacts and opportunities through formal assessment and management plans, supported by engagement and regular reporting.

Managing traffic and road impacts
Exploratory works involve vehicle movements associated with equipment, materials and workforce transport. Traffic and road impacts are assessed and managed with a focus on safety for road users and local communities.
Supporting the local area
During the exploratory works phase, we seek to contribute positively to the region by:
- using local suppliers and contractors where possible
- supporting local businesses
- working with local government, chambers of commerce and service providers to understand regional capacity and identify opportunities.

Looking ahead
Exploratory works will set the foundation for how the Borumba Project is delivered in future phases. The insights gained – both technical and social – will help shape how impacts are avoided or minimised over time.
We are committed to learning and working in partnership with communities to manage impacts while creating lasting benefits for the region and leaving a positive legacy.
