Borumba Pumped Hydro Project declared coordinated project.
Queensland Hydro has welcomed the announcement by the Deputy Premier that the Office of the Coordinator-General has declared the Borumba Project a coordinated project.
Queensland Hydro has welcomed the announcement by Deputy Premier Steven Miles that the Office of the Coordinator General (OCG) has determined that the main works for the 2,000 MW Borumba Pumped Hydro Project meets the criteria for a coordinated project under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (Qld) (SDPWO Act).
Queensland Hydro CEO Kieran Cusack said this is a significant milestone for the Borumba Project as we now work to prepare a rigorous environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Project.
“Our Borumba Project is a cornerstone of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan and presents a world of opportunity for our local communities and businesses – jobs, new industries, regional development, local investment.”
“Earlier this year we also submitted a Controlled Action referral to the Commonwealth Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwth) (EPBC Act), and we're awaiting their decision on whether the Project will be considered a Controlled Action, and what Commonwealth assessment pathway will be required.”
Mr Cusack said Queensland Hydro takes its environmental responsibility seriously and is committed to implementing measures that minimise potential impacts on local ecosystems and the environment.
Queensland Hydro would undertake detailed assessments of any potential environmental and social impacts from the proposed development.
“We will work proactively with the local community, Traditional Owners, leading experts and conservation groups throughout the process to ensure we’re implementing sustainable practices at all stages of the project, and we will keep them updated on the progress at regular intervals,” said Mr Cusack.
