Queensland Hydro sponsors housing summit in Mackay region 

Queensland Hydro is pleased to be a major sponsor of the 2023 Greater Whitsunday Housing Summit, which seeks to develop collaborative solutions to the housing issues being faced in the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions. 

The summit follows the housing roundtable held in December 2022, which identified four priority areas to be addressed at the Summit: 

• Availability and diversity of choice  
• Affordability 
• Customer needs 
• Roles and responsibilities.  

With sustainable workforce accommodation a key interest for the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, Queensland Hydro is committed to positively contributing to housing outcomes in the region given the many jobs that large construction and infrastructure projects create. 

If it proceeds, the project will require well-planned workforce accommodation that supports both future community needs and the large construction workforce to avoid adding pressure on the existing housing market.  

Queensland Hydro is working with Greater Whitsunday Communities and Regional Development Australia to find solutions for project workforce accommodation that leaves a positive legacy for the region and long-term housing benefit beyond the construction phase of the project.
