Identifing local flora and fauna.

Queensland Hydro’s ecologists have been undertaking field investigations in the vicinity of the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin project site.

Queensland Hydro’s ecologists have been undertaking field investigations to survey both the land (terrestrial) and water (aquatic) ecosystems to better understand what flora and fauna exist in the vicinity of the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin project site.

The surveys completed to date have identified hundreds of flora and fauna species which have been listed here. Flora and fauna surveys are season dependent and will continue to be carried out across the different seasons of the year.

The lists included below are not the final species list. We understand and acknowledge there will be more flora and fauna species that are yet to be found and verified by our team. We will publish updated species lists every 6 months (or more frequently if many new species have been identified during a survey event).

Species identified to date comprise:

  • 195 fauna species, including:
    – 12 amphibians
    – 23 reptiles
    – 22 mammals
    – 126 birds
    – 8 fish
    – 4 crustaceans
  • 346 plant species

It is likely that additional species, particularly aquatic species, will be identified through E-DNA samples which have been collected and submitted to a laboratory for processing. We will publish an updated species list when we receive this information.

Ecologists are out and about conducting research across our proposed Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project site.

Have you noticed any flora or fauna that you think might be of interest to our team?

If you find something of interest:

  1. Take a photo of the plant/animal
  2. Note down the geolocation, date and time
  3. Email the photo and information to our team at [email protected]

*To find the geolocation of a photo, ensure ‘location services’ are turned on for your camera app (if using your phone). Download your photos onto a computer device, and right click ‘Properties.’ Select the ‘Details’ tab and scroll down until you see ‘GPS’, specifically the longitude and latitude details.

Please note, you may also be able to download an app onto your phone to provide you with this information. If you are not able to record the GPS coordinates with your device, please provide as much information as you can about the location where the photo was taken.
