As part of the current investigation phase, Queensland Hydro is continuing to gather critical information to inform the Pioneer-Burdekin Detailed Analytical Report (DAR). While we undertake this work, we have specialists on hand to ensure fauna safety.

Queensland Hydro is currently drilling boreholes to help us understand the environmental and technical aspects of the proposed Project. The boreholes' diameters are typically between 6cm and 10cm, about the circumference of a takeaway coffee cup.

Prior to any works being undertaken, a specialist will assess the work site and surrounds to determine whether there are sensitive habitats or species that could be affected, and how best to avoid or minimise any negative impacts that may occur.

Where there is a sensitive area which requires geological surveys to take place, we ensure a fauna spotter will be present on-site during pad preparation and during commencement of drilling.

We also have sites surveyed by an aquatic ecologist. The ecologist checks for existing burrows and assesses the suitability of the riverbanks for habitat.

When we identify an area for drilling, Queensland Hydro works with landowners to understand the most appropriate and safe access to that location.

The project team will also undertake comprehensive pre-mobilisation surveys and ensure stringent controls and risk mitigation measures are in place to protect surrounding land, waterways, and flora and fauna species.
