Borumba Project continues to progress with local community group input.
In March, Queensland Hydro met with members of the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG).
In March, Queensland Hydro met with members of the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG). The meeting was held online following the postponement of a planned site visit due to recent heavy rain and flooding.
The SRG received an update from Queensland Hydro on the Project’s business case and ongoing commercial assessment, which is being developed in line with the Queensland Government’s Energy Roadmap. This work remains underway and will continue throughout 2026.
The SRG was also updated on the recently commenced Exploratory Works at the Borumba Project Site, following Queensland Hydro securing regulatory approval under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) in December 2025. These activities are critical to informing the detailed design of the proposed Project, with geotechnical investigations currently underway across the site.
What we heard from the Stakeholder Reference Group
Traffic and roads
Traffic and road management remain a key focus for the community and formed a significant part of the discussion.
Our team outlined ongoing coordination with councils and road authorities, improvements to Yielo Road, and consideration of longer-term road strategies as part of future planning. We also advised that traffic volumes associated with Exploratory Works are around 50 per cent lower than originally planned.
Existing roads and bridges are being used, with no bridge upgrades required during exploratory works. Heavy vehicle movements are being managed to avoid school bus times.
SRG Members shared feedback on the potential impact of traffic delays on local businesses, and we have committed to follow up directly with affected community members.
Environment
Environmental management measures were also an important part of the discussion. Queensland Hydro confirmed that Exploratory Works approvals are subject to conditions, supported by comprehensive management plans.
This includes securing and restoring land in line with the Offset Area Management Plan, as well as meeting a range of additional environmental requirements.
Communication
The SRG advised us the community would like more frequent and clearer project updates, including information to help address misinformation within the community.
There was strong interest in local jobs and supply opportunities, as well as a desire for more information about traffic, vehicle movements and flooding. We also heard that the community would like more opportunities to have their say as the Project progresses.
What happens next
We’re listening. Our SRG plays an important role in shaping the Borumba Project and helping us deliver positive outcomes for local communities, now and into the future.
The discussion reinforced the value of ongoing engagement, transparent communication and incorporating local knowledge into future decision making.
Queensland Hydro remains committed to working closely with our partners to create genuine opportunities for local suppliers and businesses.
A site tour for SRG members is now planned for April, subject to site conditions.
